Facebook Boycott?

I have heard other arguments for staying on Facebook, despite its unethical policies.

For example, some say "Why not stay on Facebook and fight...and be a bearer of truth?" That's good advice if the only thing you do is political activism. But that's not me.

Others say that leaving Facebook won't make a difference. (See Robert Hubbell's Today's Edition Newsletter on Substack for a discussion of that.)

Still others say that if we leave, we cede the power to Facebook, and allow hate speech, and rampant disinformation with out a fight; so in essence, Meta wins.

I understand all of that. But it feels like the right thing to do -- to NOT promote my blog in a space whose unethical standards violate my personal moral code.

Let me know what you think.

I say pull it. I have to find some time soon to contact all my friends I have gotten back in touch with on Facebook. I'll send them my email individually and if they're very important to me I'll hear from them or I'll be writing to them. I want to get off Facebook too. It really does waste a lot of my time. Because I go on for one thing and I look at many things. If enough of us stop using it and actually cancel I think it'll show a message. It sure can't hurt. So glad I get you a different way so I will still be able to see you. Love your husband's posts

I get it completely, and wonder the same thing. Here I am getting ready to re-launch a novel, called "in The Wake Of Chaos" by Delaina Layne, which deals with the chaos of the first trump administration etc. and FB is where I would naturally want to promote it. What to do? idk cause I am also planning on expanding the reach of two FB pages (Maddie's Musings, and the Burlap Sack) in conjunction with the book launch so I would need to rethink things there as well :-)

I just read Mr. Hubbel's entry today, and though I am not a major social media user (never been on twitter or substack) I find Facebook very important to learn about people I like, old friends, people I used to work with or know, since we are not close enough to correspond regularly. Also when a friend marries or dies, it is a great way to get the word out. It is also very nice to receive 70 plus happy birthday greetings from people I havent seen in ages. As to Instagram, I love the posts of my favorite opera stars, it keeps me up to date on their work. So it is very difficult to give both up, especial…

You ARE doing a good thing with your video blog. You bring lots of light into my world and I love getting to share in your life, especially since we've met, shared a meal and laughed together! I'm surprised you are not making money on YouTube.

I completely support your decision to pull back from FB; trust your feelings on this.

However, I deleted my account years ago, so I'm not very objective. Love from Memphis
